The 2017 IIA Internal Audit Compensation Study report summarizes pay practice information for 538 organizations in the U.S. and 61 organizations in Canada, collected directly from employers rather than individual internal auditors.
The report presents relevant information in a clear and concise format to assist internal auditors and employers in assessing current pay practices and to plan for the future. The report contains demographic information about the employers responding to the survey; salary trends and current retention strategies, factors affecting salary trends; and salary results for internal auditor positions.
The 2017 Compensation Study provides statistics derived from pay rates reported for internal auditors in 10 surveyed positions, including auditor interns, IT auditors, and of course, CAEs. Reports for each of the 10 positions provide results for base pay, bonus and other cash compensation, and total cash compensation, as well as attraction and retention strategies. Included in the report are salary analyses by region, staff and organization size, certifications, experience, education, and industry type, and the information is organized to provide average and median rates, as well as 10th, 25th, 75th, and 90th percentiles.
Included in this report are yearly comparisons (2014, 2015, and 2016). This year breaks a seven-year trend that observed a year-over-year increase in organizations in the U.S. that awarded salary increases to at least some portion of their workforce. In 2016, organizations have pulled back on salary increases to levels not seen since 2011-2012. All areas of compensation are also compared with those of non-audit employees.
